Why is the messenger bag such a fashion accessory? How do you choose one that's right for you?

Messenger bags first appeared in the 1950s in New York, and were adopted in the 1970s by bicycle messengers. Since then, they have become a common fashion accessory, for school, work, and everyday use. They look great with a variety of outfits and are still purposeful. A casual look with a striped tee and jeans or a dressier look with a pocket dress and wedge shoes. There's a messenger bag out there just for you!

Messenger bags are available in a variety of sizes with numerous features, so selecting the right bag can be a challenge. Here's a few tips.

Tip 1: Understand how the bag will be used.

Will you be carrying carry books or electronics items, or using it as a daily bag for your wallet, keys and a pair of cute sunglasses? The purpose of the bag affects a number of factors, including the bag size and the number of pockets it has.

Tip 2: Get the right strap.

Messenger bags have a single strap that is typically worn across the chest. Many items can be carried in the bag (like a cardigan you took off because you got hot), finding a comfortable strap is important. An adjustable strap allows you to adjust the bag according to height and preferences. The strap should be wide enough to support the bag and its contents, so the heavier the bag, the wider the strap should be.

A cross strap helps to stabilize the bag while cycling, for example, crossing the body in the opposite way to the main strap.

Tip 3: Make sure it has great pockets and compartments.

The bag should have separate sections to hold everything needed, including a safe zipper pocket for jewelry or keys. When considering the pockets, be aware that too many can encourage over packing, which will make the bag heavy and uncomfortable. That's when you get a tote! Which are great too!

Tip 4: Pick a style that works for you.

Messenger bags come in such a wide array of styles it is easy to find one that suits your personal taste. A messenger bag in bright colors is ideal for casual use, but a sleek bag is more fitting for the office. Fit your fashion sense. If you're not sure, you can do what I do. Pick out your bag, THEN buy an outfit to accompany your new bag!

These two are both handbags but with a removable shoulder strap as well. These can be used as a messenger bag when you need it. Then you can transform it into a tote and carry it by the handle.
